Modern interior design can often leave homes feeling cold or bland. The sleek edges and high polished finishes that are popular with minimalists, look bold and elegant, but can be difficult to live with, as they do not give a homely, comfortable feeling. There are ways that you can combat this by adding texture to a modern space without compromising on design, which we will explore below.

A modern space can be made to feel more comfortable with the use of texture around your windows. Different atmospheres can be created dependent upon the fabric you use, so choose your texture according to the sort of environment you would like to create in your home. A heavy velvet set of drapes will add drama to a space, whereas a lightweight fabric will give a feeling of casual comfort. Using sheer fabric on your windows can also create a more pleasant atmosphere in your home as it can diffuse the light coming into the space, and this will give a light glow in the room which may previously have felt harsh. A great example of this is the image below which has combined both heavy full length drapes with a sheer fabric in the middle, adding both drama and a feeling of light to the modern room. The texture you decide to use on the floor of your home will have a big impact on the overall design. Modern interior design generally opts for a wooden or tiled floor to complement clean lines and a minimalist feel. A rug is a good option to add texture and comfort to the space without detracting from the original modern design of the floor. A large cosy looking rug creates a focal point for the room and can complement a modern design if the correct rug is chosen. The key is to choose a solid color or bold pattern. A fussy or busy rug will not blend well with a modern design, and a detailed pattern such as a floral pattern will detract from the modern space. When choosing the texture of the rug, consider something such as faux fur or a heavy texture which will add a feeling of warmth and comfort into the home while still complementing the modern design. This rug is a perfect example of a floor covering which ticks all of the boxes. Image Source (source)

Simply adding cushions and throws to your modern space is an easy way to inject texture and a feeling of comfort to your home. Plump cushions will reduce the severity of a modern design and make your space feel more lived in. Selecting the correct fabric for your cushions and throws will make a big difference to the feeling of your space. Choose natural fabrics such as cotton or canvas for a light summery feel, or a heavy and luxurious fabric like velvet or faux fur for a feeling of decadence. Combining a selection of different cushions and throws which complement each other will help to keep your space modern. Keep away from chintzy patterns or fabrics such as lace, which will not merge well with a modern design. Image Source (source)
