Pantone, the foremost authority in the world of color has recently announced its Color of the Year for 2014. So it’s a happy goodbye to Emerald Green from 2013 and a big hello to Radiant Orchid for 2014. Radiant Orchid is a gorgeous purple shade that lies somewhere in between pink and magenta.
“While the 2013 color of the year, PANTONE 17-5641 Emerald, served as a symbol of growth, renewal and prosperity, Radiant Orchid reaches across the color wheel to intrigue the eye and spark the imagination,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®.
We love the inspiring, yet refreshing announcement from Pantone and here are a few ways you can incorporate Radiant Orchid, the color of the year, in your home:
- Kid’s room – If you have a little girl, Radiant Orchid is just the shade to drench her room in. Colors have a great effect on how we perceive emotions. The vibrant rosy undertones of this shade will ensure that the child is always energetic and happy in her surroundings. Combine this shade of purple with shades of yellow to add a sunny, warm touch to it. Mix it with white to tone it down.
- As an accent in the living room – Radiant Orchid is a cheery, fresh color and scattered bits of this color will instantly brighten up your living room. Pair radiant orchid with metallic silver accents on your mantel display or paint an accent wall for pizzazz. The color purple is derived from a mix of blue and red, therefore too much of it in the living room can add a cold feeling. Restrict the use of this shade to adding accents to your living space. Too much of this color can get boring very soon.”One of my favorite ways to use this color is as a counterpoint to strong yellow-green, tangerine or teal,” says Sensational Color president Kate Smith. You can also pair it with gray, beige, or smoky brown as a way to perk up neutrals.
- Kitchen – Radiant Orchid can be an unusual color to use in the kitchen. Go ahead and experiment with pops of purple interlaced with strong, black cabinets. The idea sounds wonderfully charming and elegant. Because of its blue-ish undertones, the color will work towards keeping the kitchen feel cooler and livelier. The color is packed with drama, personality and a refreshing punch. Balance the vibrancy and energy of the shade with neutral tones like grays, teals and turquoise, even dusty greens.
- Around the house – A new Color of the Year does not mean that you have to go ahead and change the color of the paint in your home. Radiant Orchid is a color that inspires creativity so use it to your advantage around the house while you stay on trend. Choose an area rug in this shade to draw focus to the floor. Another great idea is to upholster dining chairs in this shade of purple. You can also choose linen and bedding for your bedroom in radiant orchid.
