Extending your Space Visually with the creative use of Mirrors

For a home lacking in room, a great way to give the effect of space and light is by creatively using mirrors. Mirrors reflect light and bounce it in different directions around your home, giving a feeling of spaciousness. When used effectively, the added dimensions that mirrors create can trick the eye into believing there is more space than there actually is. This is a particularly useful tool if you are trying to sell your home and want to create an illusion of space for the prospective buyer.

This mirrored wall is a perfect example of how space can be created simply with the use of mirrors. The floor to ceiling height of the mirrors creates a seamless line of vision which makes the room extend itself to double its original size in the eyes of the viewer. The bevelled edge mirrors are also very stylish and add a touch of glamour to this apartment. The position and angle of the mirrors have been carefully chosen so that the natural light coming in through the window is reflected in the mirrored wall and so the space will have double the amount of light that it initially had, adding to the depth of the space created by the mirrors. A large decorative mirror such as this is also a great way to add a feeling of space, and it is also a very easy look to achieve. The natural light is once again reflected in the mirror, and the size of the mirror itself means that a whole other dimension is created behind the glass. The style of the mirror ties in nicely with the shabby chic interior design of the home, so it blends well and does not seem forced or out of place. It is important when adding mirrors to create space that the mirror does not stand out too much or seem like it does not belong. Image Source (source)

This very modern bathroom has cleverly used a mirror covering a whole wall to give the effect of more space. The way that the mirror has no obvious edges and fits seamlessly into the bathroom has enabled it to give the effect that the bathroom is double its original size. The mirror also doubles up as a backsplash for the sinks, which gives off a stylish minimalist vibe. Image Source (source)

Using mirrored tiles is a creative way to add mirrors to the interior design of your home. The aluminium tiles used in the bathroom pictured above do not have the sheen of a typical mirrored tile, but their ability to reflect light still has the subtle effect of adding depth to the room. The mirrored mosaics used as a backsplash in the kitchen reflect light from many different angles, giving a feeling of brightness.

Mirrored wardrobe doors are the classic way of adding space and light to a bedroom. This works particularly well when using modern mirrored doors which do not have obvious edges, and blend well into the interior of the room. The lack of hard edges, such as a wood or vinyls trim, means that the eye easily extends from the mirror to the room itself, without a harsh breaking point. Use mirrors which reach all the way from floor to ceiling to achieve the best look.  Image Source (source)

Mirrored furniture is a great option to add subtle hints of reflective light and space into your home. It works particularly well for homes which are styled in a french or venetian design, as elements of this are picked up and highlighted in mirrored cabinets and dressing tables. While mirrored furniture does not add the illusion of extra space in the same way that large mirrored walls do, the way that it bounces light will give a feeling of brightness which amplifies the feeling of spaciousness.
