In this age of modern technology almost everyone has gone gadget crazy. Anything to do with technology is sure to be swarmed by internet traffic and praised as being in line with one or another science fiction writer’s vision of the future. But there’s not as much buzz about cool electronics and gadgets made specifically for the home. So here are some new and cool products for the home that you may or not may not have heard about.
Nest Learning Thermostat
The nest thermostat can be installed by a homeowner and is controllable through your laptop, smartphone or tablet. It’s able to work with any heating system, is programmable for different temperatures at different times of day and is smart enough to turn on ahead of time so that your home is the right temperature when you get there, not just turning on when you get there. You can create an edit a temperature schedule at nest.com/home. As you turn the heat up and down, when you feel warm or cold and when you leave the house, nest keeps track of these changes and learns to keep your home at optimum temperatures. A small leaf appears on the screen whenever the temperature set is at optimum, energy saving, temperature.
Nest Protect Smoke detector+ Carbon Monoxide Alarm
This alarm has a feature we’ve all been waiting for and that is a “heads up” to warn you if your dinner smoke is about to set off the alarm. In the case of low smoke or CO levels the unit glows yellow and tells you where smoke or carbon monoxide has been detected, if you are in that area and know it’s a false alarm you can wave your arm 2’-8’ under the unit to let it know, or tell it through a smart device. If it’s a real emergency and no one silences the alarm, the light will turn red, and the voice will announce that it is now an “Emergency”, tell you where the emergency is so you can avoid that area, and start the alarm.
One of the best features of Nest gadgets is that they are designed both intelligently and beautifully and will help you save on energy costs while eliminating the annoying false alarm that leads many of us to remove the batteries from out smoke detectors. They also come in boxes made from recycled content.
This is one of those gadgets that lets you unlock your door with your smartphone. You only need to touch the lock casing and it will activate, find your phone wirelessly, and unlock if it is within a few feet. You can even send a “key copy” to a friend’s phone so they can water your plants and revoke it at any time, or even send a key that will only work between certain hours of the day. If you don’t have a smart phone UniKey offers a fob for your keychain with the same Bluetooth wireless connectivity.
